Three Day Landscape Studio/Plein Air Workshop

“The artist’s ultimate aim should be to evoke the mood of a strand of time,” Roger reflects. “I use the scene as a platform to create from, instead of being literal to it. God made us creative. If we are being literal to a scene and do not interpret with our own voice, we are depriving ourselves of using the talent given to us to its greatest capability.”
Roger will teach in the studio the first two days of this workshop. The last day you will paint outside. The instruction and insights you will gain in the studio will enhance your experience outside on day three.
This class will focus on using plein-air sketches, drawings or photographs to create larger studio pieces. While maintaining the freshness and mood of your plein-air paintings, you will discover the advantages that the time, and the use of techniques when painting in the studio provide. Roger will share some of his techniques, as well as focus on tonality, value, simplifying, how to use color correctly, and compositions.

Easels – Bring an easel large enough to hold your canvas sizes
Paint – Any quality brand will work. Please do not bring student grade paint. This is my pallet, which I recommend you bring, but you can also bring the pallet you are used to using.
- Reds: Cad Red Light, Quinacridone Rose or Red, Alizarin
- Yellows: Cad Yellow Medium, Cad Lemon
- Blues: Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt, Cerulean Blue Hue
- Earth Tones: Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Ivory Black, Transparent Red Oxide
- White: Titanium White
Brushes – Any brush you use in your studio or on location is fine to bring. Below are some of the brushes Roger uses, but do not feel you need to buy all or any of these. This is just for informational purposes, in case you are interested in what he uses. He does try different brushes, so he may have a brush not listed at the workshop:

Roger endorses both Rosemary and Trekell and has brush sets with both companies. If you want to buy brushes, this is an easy way to ensure you have good brushes for the class, and it includes many of the brushes he uses.

Note: These supplies are not in the above sets. You will still need a good quality palette knife, hotel key card, Q-Tips, and a 2″ chip brush which is available at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
- 2 – 12 X 16 inexpensive canvas panels for exercises
- 2 – canvases 16 X 20 up to 24 X 30 (your choice) for in the studio. Just make sure it fits on your easel.
- 2 – panels for plein air day. Your choice of size, but try to keep it 12 X 16 or under.
Bring several of your own Plein Air sketches and reference images .. photos, drawings
1/2″ to 1″ masking tape
Odorless mineral spirits. I use Gamsol. DO NOT BRING REAL TURP.
Brush cleaner; Holbein makes a really good one for studio
Small sketch pad and pencil
Plastic shopping bags for trash
Optional: Wet canvas carrier
