  • CAA Announces Newest Art in Public Spaces Project Celebrating Walton County Fair Centennial

The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) is proud to announce that local artist Sarah Page has been selected from the CAA’s pre-vetted Public Artist Directory and commissioned to create a vibrant large-scale mural at the Walton County Fairgrounds located at 790 N. 9th Street in DeFuniak Springs. With support from the Walton County Tourism Department, the CAA partnered with the Walton County Fair Board to produce this installation as part of the fair’s upcoming Centennial Celebration.  Measuring 72 ft wide x 10.5 ft high, the original work will serve as a backdrop on the south, arena-facing wall near the agricultural and livestock exhibits where it can be enjoyed and photographed by attendees of the fair and other events. The mural will serve as a colorful representation of the rich agricultural heritage and vibrant arts in our community. Established in 1924, the fair has been a cornerstone of Walton County, offering a platform for individuals of all ages to showcase their talents and skills. The CAA also sponsors several fair awards, including the Walton County Student Art Exhibit. “I thought I was excited about the Walton County Fair being 100 years old, and then the Cultural Arts Alliance came along and gave the Walton County Fair Board of Directors the most awesome gift, the mural,” said Walton County Fair Association volunteer Janie Griffith. “This will be the highlight of all photos from the Fair this year. I can't wait to see the participants' eyes when they see it. On behalf of the Walton County Fair Board, I want to thank Jennifer Steele, Courtney Malone, and Sarah Page for all their patience and understanding as we worked through the process of getting everything just right. The mural is the best gift the Fair could have received.” “I couldn't have asked for a nicer group of people to work with at the Walton County Fairgrounds. They work very hard, and the fact that they're all volunteers shows how passionate they are about what the fair means to this community,” said artist Sarah Page, a resident of DeFuniak Springs. “I'm really happy with how the final mural design came to life, which was a collaborative effort between me and the Fair Board members. My creative skillset plus their expertise made a perfect match.”  The mural is the newest addition to the CAA’s growing Art in Public Spaces program which is designed to enhance Walton County's cultural fabric locally, regionally and nationally by creating meaningful experiences and engagement, expanding public awareness and enjoyment of the Arts in everyday life, thus making Walton County a more inspiring and memorable destination. The program also includes the first Underwater Museum of Art in the U.S. off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park, the Watersound® Monarch Art Trail, the 10 murals lining the recently opened Highway 98 Pedestrian Underpass in Inlet Beach as well as other installations throughout the county.  "Integrating our Art in Public Spaces projects, particularly at iconic locations like the Walton County Fair, enables our community to fully embrace the power of creativity. The CAA is honored to work with Walton County Tourism Department to set the stage for beautiful memories to be made,” said Courtney Malone, Director of Programs & Creative Placemaking. “This fusion of creativity and tradition not only honors the Fair’s history but also sparks inspiration and connection for generations to come." All are invited to see the new mural during the 2024 Fair, a week-long celebration from October 14-19, featuring live performances, livestock shows, arts and crafts, food vendors, and family-friendly activities. Enjoy affordable fun with $5 admission for ages 6 and up, and free entry for children 5 and under. Celebrate the harvest, enjoy wonderful entertainment, and explore amusement rides at one of the last affordable events in our area. Open rain or shine. • Miramar Beach Creative Campus Update

Hello, Arts Supporters: One thing is certain here at the Cultural Arts Alliance: things are always changing. This usually signifies growth, but it can also mean a pause, sometimes not by choice. This provides an opportunity to evaluate our programs and services for improvement, which can then lead to more growth and opportunity. We have been fortunate to work with individuals and businesses over the years who have supported the development of many of those programs, including providing affordable brick-and-mortar spaces that have housed our beloved Foster Gallery. For the last two years, we have had a beautiful home at the Miramar Beach Creative Campus. It is with gratitude and also sadness that we announce its closing this month, as the building has been sold and will become home to a new local business. In the near future, the CAA will centralize its arts education operations at the Bayou Arts Center in Santa Rosa Beach. The studio and office spaces are being redesigned to accommodate the expansion of our pottery program and open studio, as well as our traditional visual arts classes and special offerings. Several improvements have already been made to the space, including new lighting, flooring, and power upgrades to support the additional ceramics equipment needed to meet the high demand for this popular program. The Foster Gallery will be temporarily closed until we find a permanent location. In the meantime, we have expanded our partnerships with local businesses to provide spaces for CAA Member Artists to display and sell their work. These locations include the Coastal Branch Library, Emerald Coast Theatre Company, and the Point Washington Medical Clinic. Stay tuned for more exhibition opportunities as we add more community collaborators. We are looking forward to the future, but we want to take this chance to honor our past and everyone who has helped us achieve our goals. We want to express our sincere thanks to the artists who have entrusted us with their work, the enthusiastic patrons who support the arts, our Board of Directors, and all who have visited our doors over the years to be part of the experience. We are especially grateful to Shawn & Richard Tomasello for providing us with the Miramar Beach Creative Campus space. Their generosity has enabled the CAA to increase artist involvement in the gallery, expand our pottery studio program, and extend our outreach programs. Without the Tomasello’s financial and in-kind contributions, we would not have been able to call such a beautiful space our home for the past two years. Their support has allowed us to grow and scale our pottery education program, fulfilling a significant need for 3D arts education. The Tomasello's ongoing support as benefactors of the arts in Walton County is invaluable to us, and we are fortunate to have their trust and backing. Thanks to our Director of Administration, Lee Greene, Program Manager Pam Singh, Lead Pottery Instructor Jessica Batson, and other teaching artists who have been instrumental in leading the MBCC operations over the past two years. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Donnelle Clark Reagin, Mary Redmann, Skip Deems, Mindy Moore, and numerous other gallery artists for their tireless volunteering efforts since the Foster Gallery’s inception, which have been crucial to ensuring its success. During this period, we have showcased the works of over 200 artists, resulting in the sale of more than $525,000 worth of original artworks. We have also hosted over 50 quarterly rotations and special exhibitions, complete with opening receptions for artists and arts enthusiasts. Furthermore, we have provided field trip opportunities for over 700 area students, allowing them to experience a professional gallery space. Our educational programs have offered income earning opportunities for our creative community. Additionally, we were honored to be the Florida host gallery for the Southern Prize for Visual Arts. While this pause is not permanent, it presents an opportunity for us to make strategic decisions about the future of the gallery, arts education programming, and methods to further engage with the community we serve. Thank you for being a part of our journey! With thanks, Jennifer Steele President & CEO

  • CAA Announces Installation of 10 Murals to Hwy 98 Pedestrian Underpass

The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) is proud to announce that original murals commissioned and created by 10 local artists were recently installed on the walls of Walton County’s first pedestrian underpass at U.S. Highway 98 in Inlet Beach, which opened to the public over Labor Day weekend. The 136-foot-long underpass frames the east end of Walton County at the high-traffic corner of Hwy. 98 and County Hwy. 30A, both designated scenic corridors.  The installation includes artworks by Francisco Adaro, Katherine Boggs, Heather Clements, Bradley Copeland, Olga Guy, Wes Hinds, Sarah Page, Andy Saczynski, Andrea Scurto and Lindsay Tobias . Artists were selected from the CAA’s pre-vetted Public Artist Directory and each created a mural measuring 20 ft wide x 8 ft high.  The public art component is part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s greater $5.6 million Underpass project and was created in collaboration with Scenic Walton, Walton County Board of County Commissioners, and Walton County Tourism Department. Additional support was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, St. Joe Community Foundation, Rosemary Beach Realty, Market 30A, 30A.com , Morning Star Foundation, 30Avenue, Howard Group, and John and Nina Freer.  “After years of planning and collaboration, we are excited to unveil these works of art in an underpass that will provide safe passage to so many Walton County residents and visitors,” said CAA President & CEO Jennifer Steele. “ The murals wonderfully express the theme of connectivity and relationship among humans, nature, and our built environment, and the CAA is grateful to be a part of this important project that provides connection for our community.” All are invited to attend the Inlet Beach Underpass Get Down event on Saturday, September 28 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. in celebration of the new underpass. The “Get Down” will feature an official ribbon cutting and parade through the tunnel followed by live music and arts activities on the Green at 30Avenue. The event is free and open to the public, and food and beverages will be available for purchase from 30Avenue’s restaurants. The installation will grow to include Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) replica sculptures, including Common Chord from Vince Tatum sponsored by St. Joe Community Foundation, Let’s Not Blow This  from Kevin Reilly sponsored by Rosemary Beach Realty, and The Grayt Pineapple  from Rachel Herring McCord, that will be installed on the north and south entrances of the underpass in late fall 2024. Produced in partnership with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association, the UMA was the first Art in Public Spaces project for the CAA.  The CAA’s Art in Public Spaces Program is designed to foster collaboration, celebrate community, encourage tourism and exploration, stimulate the economy, and enhance the physical environment as well as the unique culture and beauty of Walton County.

  • UMA Expands With 7 New Sculptures

Seven new sculptures were recently added to North America’s first permanent Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park in South Walton, Fla.   Named by TIME Magazine as one of 100 “World’s Greatest Places,” and a 2023 CODAworx Award winner for “Collaboration of the Year”,  the UMA is the first presentation of the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA)’s Art In Public Spaces Program and is produced in collaboration with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA). The purpose of the UMA is to create art that becomes marine habitat, expanding fishery populations and providing enhanced creative, cultural, economic and educational opportunities for the benefit, education and enjoyment of residents, students and visitors in South Walton. The 2024 installation includes the following pieces of sculpture: Reef Goddess  By Raine Bedsole (Santa Rosa Beach, FL), Deep Sea Three  by Matthew Gemmell and David Showalter (Baltimore, MD), Sea How We Flow  by Elise Gilbert (Santa Rosa Beach, FL), Poseidon’s Throne by Nathan Hoffman (Highlandville, MO), Bubby Barnacles  by Donna Conklin King (East Orange, NJ), Sunken Spores  by Ashley Rivers (Gulfport, FL), and Ring My Bell  by Bradley Touchstone (Santa Rosa Beach, FL).    On August 8, more than 75 onlookers, including several of the artists and project partners, were on site to view the historic deployment. This year, the team was able to expand the livestream to include a host to narrate the event with information about the sculptures and insightful details about the process. The event is available to view on the UMA website at umafl.org .   With support from Visit South Walton, Walton County and Walter Marine/The Reefmaker, the sculptures were deployed with SWARA’s existing USACE and FDEP permitted artificial reef project that includes nine nearshore reefs located within one nautical mile of the shore in 58 feet of water. This installation joins the 40 sculptures previously deployed on a one-acre permit patch of seabed off Grayton Beach State Park, expanding the nation’s first permanent underwater museum to a total of 47 sculptures. The UMA patch will continue to be filled with several new sculptures annually.  Individual sculptures are sponsored by the Ellis Family, Hilton Sandestin Golf Beach Resort & Spa, Laurel Machine & Foundry, SearchNexus, Seagrove Village Market Café, the St. Joe Community Foundation, Touchstone Architecture and Walter Marine / Reefmaker..   “The CAA is very proud of the continued collaboration with our co-founders and project partners SWARA, Allison Wickey and Walton County, and grateful to the artists, fabricators, deployment team and sponsors for working with us to grow the UMA each year,” said CAA President & CEO Jennifer Steele. “We were especially excited about the addition of the 2025 installation’s livestream footage, which ensures that every person can experience the magic of the UMA. We look forward to bringing more technological advancements, underwater video and photos to our website to show the real-time evolution of the artwork as artificial reef.” “The 2024 Deployment marks a huge milestone in UMA's growth,”  says SWARA President and Dive30A owner Walt Hartley. “With some of the largest and most intricate sculptures yet, we have successfully connected the bulk of the Museum to the Super Reef Anchor Point on the eastern boundary of the permit site. Visiting divers can now navigate the entire Museum by sight, easily swimming from one sculpture to the next without having to rely on a compass (assuming at least decent visibility). This will also help to keep anchors outside of the Museum's boundaries and away from the art. We will continue to rely on the discretion and respect of those visiting UMA to help protect and preserve this unique marine habitat. It takes extraordinary vision and determination to make something out of nothing. But this team, this partnership, and the incredible network of support (local and global) continue to raise the bar each year. And the proof in the pudding is the marine life that isn't just ‘passing through’ anymore -- they've made UMA their home.”  Admission to the UMA is free, however, the site is only accessible in person as a dive location. Divers who wish to visit the site can take a dive boat .93 miles off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park. The coordinates for the Super Reef UMA entrance are N 30°18.754 / W 86°09.521. Out of respect for the art, boaters are asked to anchor [ONLY on the 'EAST' side of the Super Reef Anchor Point] to protect the sculptures from unintended contact or damage. [Per FL State Law, always heed dive flags and other vessels!] Visit UMAFL.org for more information about dive tours. Photos and videos of the sculptures will continue to be updated online periodically to document the marine growth on each sculpture. Both SWARA and the CAA wish to extend special thanks to our deployment partner, Walter Marine, for their dedication to excellence in helping bring our vision into reality.
