- The Golden Flight
The Golden Flight sculpture is inspired by the Golden Spiral. The Golden Spiral is a logarithmic spiral whose growth factor is φ, the golden ratio. The spiral gets wider (or further from its origin) by a factor of φ for every quarter turn it makes. Many objects in nature appear with the golden spiral. Some examples are the shell of a nautilus, the rotations of hurricanes, the growth pattern of leaves on succulents, and the design in which sunflower seeds grow within a sunflower. The main part of the sculpture consists of 10 pieces of stainless steel bands formed into the shape of the Golden Spiral. Once in place, the spirals create the impression of different pieces of nature, from a wave, to shells, and most notably, wings. About the artist Rachel Herring has been designing and creating for as long as she can remember. When she was little, she was never without a crayon or marker in her hand. Continuing through school, Rachel took all the art classes she could and created t-shirts and set designs for dances in high school. Knowing she wanted to major in a design field, Rachel graduated with a degree in Interior Design and another in Business Administration from Auburn University. While in school, she learned how to use Adobe Creative Suite, and it ignited a desire to do graphic design. Rachel moved to Birmingham for an internship and remained there after graduation. Still having a major interest in graphic design, she started Herring Design Co. to design custom invitations for people. The business grew by word of mouth, and so did the products she offered. Rachel has always loved working with her hands, so after a kitchen renovation, she had leftover wood that she knew couldn't go to waste. Her first string art creations were made from these pieces. Shortly after, she grew her tool collection, and set her mind to having a career as an artist. Business grew quickly after sharing these pieces, and in addition to art shows, she got her artwork into stores in the area. After seven years in Birmingham, AL, Rachel moved to Santa Rosa Beach, FL. The surroundings at the beach have influenced the subject matter of her artwork from the beautiful blues and greens from the Emerald Coast waters to the spectacular sunsets. Rachel is no stranger to the CAA’s Art in Public Spaces program with two more of her sculptures (The Grayt Pineapple and Flamingle) residing in the Underwater Museum of Art located off the coast of nearby Grayton Beach State Park along Scenic Highway 30A. https://www.herringdesignco.com/ Previous Next 4 5 6 7 8 3 2 1

- Julie Harvey | Cultural Arts Alliance
Julie Harvey is a painter of large-scale contemporary abstract works on canvas. Her paintings are bold and gestural while maintaining approachable, thoughtfully balanced compositions. Julie is a native of Franklin, Tennessee, where she lived and worked for over 40 years. In 2019, she and her husband decided to start a new adventure by relocating to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, where she draws endless inspiration from the beautiful white sands, abundant wildlife, bays and waterways of the southeastern shore. Her media preferences include heavy-bodied acrylics mixed with gel medium and ink on canvas. The process of moving paint is the essence of her work, and involves several stages of cutting and mending paint layers, revealing colors and forms lost beneath while building up additional planes of color and texture. Julie received her Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Art, Concentration in Painting, from Tennessee Tech University. She also attended Belmont University, Middle Tennessee State University, and studied abroad before completing her degree in 1998. Art in Public Spaces The CAA’s Art in Public Spaces program integrates a wide range of public art both above and below sea level. The mission of our program is to enhance Walton County's cultural fabric locally, regionally and nationally by creating meaningful experiences and engagement, expanding public awareness and enjoyment of the Arts in everyday life, thus making Walton County a more inspiring and memorable destination. Our Art in Public Spaces activations are designed to foster collaboration, celebrate community and culture, encourage exploration, strengthen the economy, and activate the unique environment of Walton County. The internationally acclaimed program originated in 2018 with the introduction of the nation’s first Underwater Museum of Art (UMA). Since then, the program has expanded to include the Billboard Art Project, a series of murals throughout the County and most recently, The Watersound® Monarch Art Trail (MAT). Growth plans include the Highway 98 Underpass project which is currently under construction as well as an Artist Directory to shine a spotlight on artists specifically interested in Public Art projects. The directory is shared for participation in various Walton County projects, and artists may be contracted to design, fabricate, and install public art. - Joanne Jones | Cultural Arts Alliance
I studied Art History and Drawing in college with a goal to pursue my passion in one form or the other. In the beginning my medium was pencil/charcoal but recently strolled into the arena of acrylic/collage. I will always be drawn to realism with that in mind I am truly enjoying the adventure. - Anthony Heinz May | Cultural Arts Alliance
Anthony Heinz May has spent the majority of his life in the Pacific NW, exploring relationships between nature, humans and technology. As an Oregonian he seeks various natural and human-built environments as location for public installations of sculpture, to highlight human intervention in natural spaces. Material for Anthony’s artwork include dead and dying trees, insect patterns and natural cycles that foster artistic insight and inspiration for his creations. May’s art facilitates interrogation of human history where its legacy leaves nature in dire straits, continually sidelined for how humans define progress and deep technological artificiality associated with it. In his artistic puzzles, Anthony Heinz May uses a genre of art he refers to as eco-aestheticism, to support dehumanization as originating through relations humans developed with Earth and the natural world as existing solely for human exhaustion.
