  • CAA Partners With Boys & Girls Club For Program Expansions

The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of the Emerald Coast to expand its Youth Arts Education program for club members and produce a high-quality mural that will serve as a source of inspiration and education to club visitors and participants. The new 20’ x 20’ (approximate) mural installation is near completion and featured on the blue architectural wall at the entrance of the South Walton club on Boys & Girls Club Way near the Coastal Branch Library and South Walton High School. The art work focuses on the theme “Great Futures Start Here” and was created by local artist Morgan Summers. The mural is a new addition to the CAA’s growing Art in Public Spaces program which also includes the nation’s first Underwater Museum of Art and the Watersound® Monarch Art Trail as well as planned installations at the upcoming U.S. Highway 98 Pedestrian Underpass. In addition to the mural, the CAA has developed a Youth Arts Education program to be integrated into the programming already offered to K-12 students at Boys & Girls Walton County clubs, including both the South Walton and DeFuniak Springs clubs. A weekly offering for each location is planned and will focus on a curriculum to foster youth creativity with projects like an ‘All About Me’ Self Portrait, a Flutterby Children’s Arts Festival exhibit, recycled material art, Picasso collages and so much more. “Clubs provide a safe space to allow creative expression for the young people that we serve on a daily basis,” said Shervin Rassa, Chief Executive Officer at Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast. “Partnering with the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County will enhance the implementation of our Arts program, and will help Club Members build skills in the four pillars of “The Arts”: visual, digital, performing, and applied arts. Collectively, we will continue to give young people the opportunity to create, grow, and express themselves.” "I have personally experienced the Boys & Girls Club's positive impact on our community, and the addition of a diverse, year-long Arts program will only lead to even better outcomes and more well-rounded students," said CAA Executive Director Jennifer Steele. "Collaboration is key to the success of many of the CAA's programs, and we are proud to work with the Boys & Girls Club of the Emerald Coast team to foster creativity in its Club Members and help cultivate their sense of self through artistic expression and learning." The CAA is excited to grow its team with the hiring of Elise Gilbert to facilitate the curriculum. In her role as Program Coordinator, Elise will focus on Youth Education through her work at the Boys & Girls Club as well as the CAA’s popular Creative Kids Camps. She will also be focused on community engagement through event volunteer coordination and programming at the Miramar Beach Creative Campus. An artist in her own right, Elise’s work can be seen at The Foster Gallery located at the Miramar Beach Creative Campus at 13370 Emerald Coast Parkway. Jeff Tweedy – As the founding member and leader of the Grammy Award winning legendary American rock band Wilco, and before that the co-founder of the groundbreaking alt‐country band Uncle Tupelo, Jeff Tweedy is one of contemporary music’s most accomplished songwriters, musicians, and performers. Jeff has released three solo albums, written original songs for thirteen Wilco albums, and is the author of two New York Times’ Bestselling books. Jeff will release his third book, World Within A Song, on Nov. 7, 2023. Jeff travels all over the world performing with Wilco and on his own to sold out audiences. We are extremely fortunate to welcome Jeff Tweedy to our headline stage to celebrate our 15th year of the 30A Songwriters Festival. Elvis Costello & the Imposters - Elvis Costello has followed his musical curiosity in a career spanning more than 40 years. An award-winning songwriter, performer, author, and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Costello began his career as part of London’s pub rock scene in the early 1970s and became a seminal figure in the emerging new wave and British punk movements later in the decade. His debut album, My Aim Is True (1977) – inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 2007 – was a breakout success and was followed in rapid succession by This Year’s Model (1978) and Armed Forces (1979). All three appear on Rolling Stone’s list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." He is perhaps best known for his performances with The Attractions and the Imposters. Acclaimed collaborators include Burt Bacharach, The Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, and the Roots. His songs have been recorded by a number of great artists including: George Jones, Chet Baker, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison. This January, Elvis Costello and the Imposters will take to the mainstage at Grand Boulevard to dazzle the 15th Annual 30A Songwriters audience with a wide-ranging set of classic songs. Rosanne Cash - When you read the name Rosanne Cash, chances are you think of the singer-songwriter with nearly two dozen Top 40 hits, fourteen Grammy nominations, and four Grammy Awards. If you have paid close attention, you may also think of Cash as an author, whose memoir Composed garnered praise from high-profile critics and landed on The New York Times’s bestseller list. Or you have seen her as a music community catalyst who often brings together giants of American roots music for various events. Or in documentary films, as someone with a valued voice and a first-hand experience of modern music history. If you take a step back, though, it becomes much clearer that Rosanne Cash is all these things at once. The totality of her role as an artist, a woman, and the responsible courier of a storied cultural legacy means Cash is a rare artist with many outlets. All of these point toward the same end: Her belief that art and culture are a vital, shaping force in society. Indeed, Rosanne Cash has begun with music and art since she launched her career in 1978. But that has always been just the beginning. This year, Rosanne will be performing with her longtime partner and collaborator John Leventhal and their band celebrating 30 years of music making together. KT Tunstall - KT Tunstall burst onto the music scene with her 2004 multi-platinum debut, Eye to the Telescope, which spawned the global hits "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See." These songs established Tunstall as a captivating, must-see performer, as well as a songwriter with a singular knack for balancing introspective folk and propulsive rock. "I feel there are two immediate, recognizable pillars of my style," she says. "I have this troubadour, acoustic guitar-driven emotional side. Then there's definitely a rocker side of me with sharper teeth." In the last few years, the Grammy-nominated Scottish Musician has expanded on these musical selves by focusing on a trilogy of records, where each album zeroes in on a single concept: soul, body and mind. The first, 2016's KIN, was the soul record; 2018 WAX was the body record, and the new NUT is the mind record. The 30A Songwriters Festival production team transforms amphitheaters, town halls, restaurants, theaters, bars and covered patios into unique music venues with state of the art sound systems with capacities ranging from 100 to 1000 seats indoors and 6,000 outdoors. The 30A Songwriters Festival is co-produced by Russell Carter Artist Management and the Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA) of Walton, and net proceeds from the Festival support the CAA's mission to advance the Arts in Walton County, Florida. • UMA Receives CODAaward

The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) in partnership with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) is proud to announce that the Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) recently received the 2023 CODAaward for Collaboration of the Year! CODAawards: Collaboration of Design + Art recognizes outstanding projects that integrate commissioned art into interior, architectural, or public spaces. The 11th annual international design competition recently announced winners across 10 categories, as well as 2 People’s Choice Award winners and a new Collaboration Award. This year’s 411 submissions came from 24 countries around the globe, celebrating innovation and artistic excellence. This year, a new award was added for the first time. Titled the Collaboration of the Year Award, this honor goes to the project that demonstrates the importance of the collaborative process among creative teams, commissioners, and industry resources. Toni Sikes, CEO of CODAworx states that “The Collaboration of the Year Award recognizes the collective imagination of many professionals who work together to create spaces that are transformed through artwork. The end result is pure magic.” Information on the 2023 CODAawards is available on CODAworx.com. “It is an honor that CODAworx created a category that represents the heart and soul of the Underwater Museum of Art and recognizes its true collaborative nature,” said CAA Executive Director Jennifer Steele. “The CAA is grateful to work alongside co-founders Allison Wickey and SWARA, Walton County, The Reefmaker, and our supportive partners to bring the UMA to life and ensure its long term success. It would not happen without each partner’s diligence, creative spirit, technical knowledge and passion for the project.” "The experience of swimming through the Underwater Museum, seeing all these amazing works of art and the thriving marine ecosystem they've become, is truly inspirational. But what's left the deepest impression is the collective passion, creativity, determination, and teamwork that have built the UMA since the start,” said SWARA President Walt Hartley. “SWARA is proud and grateful to work in partnership with the CAA, our community, and our supporters to Create Living Reefs for Generations. The CODAworx 'Collaboration of the Year' award is a true honor, and a real testament to the UMA's continued growth and success. Credit is also due to the tremendous marine life populating the UMA site -- even underwater, the collaboration continues!" Named by TIME Magazine as one of 100 of the “World’s Greatest Places,” the UMA is the first and only permanent underwater sculpture museum in the United States and is located in Northwest Florida, less than one mile off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park in Walton County, Florida. The UMA has been featured in online and print publications including National Geographic, Lonely Planet, Travel & Leisure, Newsweek, The New York Times, and more. Part of the CAA’s Art In Public Spaces program, the UMA also augments SWARA's mission of creating marine habitat and expanding fishery populations while providing enhanced cultural, economic and educational opportunities for the benefit, education, and enjoyment of Walton County residents, including students and visitors. The project is supported by Visit South Walton, the Florida Division of Arts and Culture, the National Endowment for the Arts, Visit Florida, and The Alys Foundation. The UMA is produced in conjunction with SWARA’s existing USACOE and FDEP permitted artificial reef project that includes nine nearshore reefs located within one nautical mile of the shore in approximately 58 feet of water. The first phase of the UMA project included seven pieces of sculpture installed in June 2018 and the fifth installation occurred in July 2023, bringing the total number of UMA sculptures to 40. Learn more about the project, see photos and video of the previous installations at UMAFL.org.

  • Six New Sculptures Added to Nation's First Underwater Museum of Art

It may have been a cloudy and rainy day, but the Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) deployment team was all smiles last week as six new sculptures were added to the nation’s first permanent Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park in South Walton, Fla. Named by TIME Magazine as one of 100 “World’s Greatest Places,” the UMA is the first presentation of the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA)’s Art In Public Spaces Program and is produced in collaboration with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA). The purpose of the UMA is to create art that becomes marine habitat, expanding fishery populations and providing enhanced creative, cultural, economic and educational opportunities for the benefit, education and enjoyment of residents, students and visitors in South Walton. The 2023 installation includes the following pieces of sculpture: Quantum Reef by Chris Chubb (Tallahassee, FL), Space Nest by Frank Henderson (Evanston, IL), Welcome Home by Zachery Long (Oklahoma City, OK), Cetacean Remains by Pat Mclain (Stone Mountain, GA), One Tree by Ann Moeller Steverson (Huntsville, AL) Opus by Allison Wickey (Santa Rosa Beach, FL). On July 13th, more than 75 onlookers, including several of the artists and project partners, were on site to view the historic deployment. New this year, the team was able to livestream all of the action to the UMA website and is still available for viewing at umafl.org. With support from Visit South Walton, Walter Marine/The Reefmaker, and Florida Cultural Affairs, the sculptures were deployed with SWARA’s existing USACOA and FDEP permitted artificial reef project that includes nine nearshore reefs located within one nautical mile of the shore in 58 feet of water. This installation joins the 34 sculptures previously deployed on a one-acre permit patch of seabed off Grayton Beach State Park, expanding the nation’s first permanent underwater museum to a total of 40 sculptures. The UMA patch will continue to be filled with several new sculptures annually. Individual sculptures are sponsored by the Ellis Family, Hilton Sandestin Golf Beach Resort & Spa, Merrill Lynch - Brown, Burns and Associates, Morning Star Foundation, and the St. Joe Community Foundation. “The UMA installation is always awe inspiring and this year was no exception. The collaboration amongst all of the groups and individuals who make the deployment happen annually is incredible, '' said CAA Executive Director Jennifer Steele. “As the UMA continues to expand, the CAA is grateful for the excitement and dedication of the artists, fabricators, deployment team and partners. We are so proud to work alongside project co-founders Allison Wickey and SWARA to build this unique environment for creativity and education.” “This year's UMA deployment was one for the books,” says SWARA President and Dive30A owner Walt Hartley. “These six new sculptures will truly enrich the personality and character of the Museum. It was also our very first time livestreaming the full deployment online so folks all around the world were able to watch! 'Cetacean Remains' is definitely going to become a diver's favorite with its fantastic swim-through. Fish began to congregate around all the sculptures almost immediately. 'If you build it, they will come!' With 40 total sculptures now, the Underwater Museum of Art is really coming into its own, and it's been nothing short of inspirational to watch it grow over the years. None of this would be possible without the continued support from our community, the WalterMarine/Reefmaker Crew, and our collaborative partnership with the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County. Big thanks to all involved! We can't wait to do it again next year!" We are also thrilled to share that the UMA was recently selected by the 2023 CODAawards jury as a Top 100 finalist representing the best design and art projects! This year 411 projects from around the world were submitted for consideration to the awards, which recognize design projects demonstrating the most successful integration of commissioned art into an interior, architectural or public space. Now it's time to cast your vote: the top 2 projects receiving the most votes will be crowned People's Choice winners. Voting is simple and easy. Just click the "Vote" button below the "Underwater Museum of Art" project on the official voting site. You are only allowed to vote once per project. Final tallies for votes will be audited at the close of the competition and CODAworx reserves the right to take action in the event of inappropriate voting. Cast your vote at codaworx.com/codaawards/2023-top-100/! The deadline for votes is Monday, July 31 at 11:59 pm, central time (GMT -5:00). Admission to the UMA is free, however, the site is only accessible in person as a dive location. Divers who wish to visit the site can take a dive boat .93 miles off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park. The coordinates for the new Super Reef UMA entrance are N 30°18.754 / W 86°09.521. Out of respect for the art, boaters are asked to anchor on or near the Super Reef Anchor Point to protect the sculptures from unintended contact or damage. Visit UMAFL.org for more information about dive tours. Photos and videos of the sculptures will continue to be updated online periodically to document the marine growth on each sculpture. Both SWARA and the CAA wish to extend special thanks to our deployment partner, Walter Marine, for their dedication to excellence in helping bring our vision into reality. Artists interested in submitting artwork for consideration to the 2024 UMA installation can visit UMAFL.org to sign up for notification of an Artist Call announcement later this Fall.
