- CAA To Develop Monarch Art Trail With Support From St. Joe Community Foundation
Artists called to submit 3D design proposals for public art project connecting Highway 98 with Scenic Highway 30A The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) is excited to announce a new public art project and is requesting proposals from artists or artist groups for the design, fabrication, and installation of small-scale or mid-scale permanent outdoor works of art along the planned Monarch Art Trail (MAT). Eight (8) pieces of work that are inspired by, representative of, or celebrating the natural environment of Northwest Florida and/or the migration of the Monarch butterfly through our region will be installed along a one-mile stretch of bike path that connects Highway 98 with Scenic Highway 30A. The Monarch Art Trail will be an obvious north/south thoroughfare for cyclists, joggers and walkers connecting them from the neighborhoods of Watersound Origins to the Scenic Highway 30A bike path and beaches. It will also become a destination of cultural interest, especially during the Fall when it will be flooded with the migratory Monarch butterflies. The Art Trail project is supported by the St. Joe Community Foundation and is part of the CAA’s Art in Public Spaces Program which includes the nation’s first Underwater Museum of Art, a regional billboard art project, and a county-wide mural project that just began with a mural by Sarah Page in Grand Boulevard Town Center. “We are thrilled to work with the St. Joe Community Foundation to bring our first above-ground sculpture project to life,” said CAA Executive Director Jennifer Steele. “Public art adds enormous value to the cultural, aesthetic and economic vitality of a community, and the CAA is proud to present a project that will benefit our entire population and inspire the creation of more public art in Walton County.” “The St. Joe Community Foundation is excited to collaborate with the CAA to bring this public art attraction to Watersound Parkway and the South Walton community,” said The St. Joe Community Foundation Executive Director April Wilkes. “The enhanced trail will be a lovely destination, particularly during the Monarch Butterfly migration each fall.” The Monarch Art Trail opportunity is open to artists and artist teams whose proposals have a demonstrated history of completing small to large scale outdoor public art projects. Artist teams must have a demonstrated history of collaboration. Following the application deadline, the CAA will convene a panel of arts specialists to review the applications and select proposals for completion and installation. Eight artists will be commissioned to develop design proposals and create a 3D piece of original artwork to be permanently installed along the Monarch Trail. Each artist will receive a $9,000 stipend inclusive of design fees, materials, labor, fabrication, construction, packing materials, shipping, and transportation. Once selections are made, artists will be notified and have approximately five months to complete and deliver work to Walton County, FL where the completed sculptures will be exhibited. Artists may learn more about the project, see site photos and submit online proposals through April 23, 2021 using the link below. Interested artists must be registered with Submittable where the artist call and details are posted. Download Guidelines >> View Site Location >>
- Underwater Museum Of Art Expands With 4th Deployment
Last week, nine new sculptures and a Super Reef Anchor Point were added to the nation’s first permanent Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park in South Walton, Fla. Named by TIME Magazine as one of 100 “World’s Greatest Places,” the UMA is the first presentation of the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA)’s Art In Public Spaces Program and is produced in collaboration with the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA). The purpose of the UMA is to create art that becomes marine habitat, expanding fishery populations and providing enhanced creative, cultural, economic and educational opportunities for the benefit, education and enjoyment of residents, students and visitors in South Walton. The 2022 installation includes the following pieces of sculpture: Currents and Tafoni by Joe Adams (Ventura, CA), Pirate Shipwreck by Sean Coffey (Pittsburgh, PA), Bloom Baby Bloom by Brit Deslonde (Santa Rosa Beach, FL), The Seed and The Sea by Davide Galbiati (Valreas, France), Fibonacci Conchousness by Anthony Heinz May (Eugene, OR), New Homes by Janetta Napp (Honolulu, HI), Arc of Nexus by Tina Piracci (Richmond, CA), We All Live Here by Marisol Rendón (San Diego, CA), and Common Chord by Vince Tatum (Santa Rosa Beach, FL). On June 21st, more than 60 onlookers, including several of the artists and project partners, were on site to view the historic deployment. With support from Visit South Walton, Walter Marine/The Reefmaker, and the Florida Department of State; Division of Arts and Culture, the sculptures were deployed with SWARA’s existing USACOA and FDEP permitted artificial reef project that includes nine nearshore reefs located within one nautical mile of the shore in 58 feet of water. This installation joins the 25 sculptures previously deployed on a one-acre permit patch of seabed off Grayton Beach State Park, expanding the nation’s first permanent underwater museum to a total of 34 sculptures. The UMA patch will continue to be filled with several new sculptures annually. Individual sculptures are sponsored by Beachy Blooms, Buddy’s Seafood Market, the 2021-22 CAA Staff, the Ellis Family, Hilton Sandestin Golf Beach Resort & Spa, the St. Joe Community Foundation, SWARA, and Walter Marine / Reefmaker. “I continue to be amazed and inspired by all the groups and individuals who make the UMA installation happen each year, '' said CAA Executive Director Jennifer Steele. “The CAA is grateful for the dedication of the artists, fabricators, deployment team and partners. We could not be prouder to work alongside project co-founders Allison Wickey and SWARA to build this unique environment for creativity and education.” “Absolutely epic! This year's UMA deployment was the best one yet. Perfect sea conditions with plenty of sunshine and an incredible group of people working together to make a difference -- the UMA spirit was alive and well on June 21st!,” said SWARA President Walt Hartley. “ With 34 total sculptures now, you can really start to see and feel the vision and future of the Underwater Museum of Art -- 58 feet down, you are literally surrounded by these fantastic art pieces and the colorful reef life that calls the Museum home. More sculptures will be added each year, growing the dive site and providing valuable new habitat to our precious marine life. We owe the continued success of the UMA project to the amazing support from our community and our sponsors, the creativity, expertise, and professionalism of the Reefmaker Crew / WalterMarine, and the hard work of our most favorite partners in the whole world - the CAA Team! This would not be possible without 110% effort from everyone involved, and we knocked it outta the park!” Admission to the UMA is free, however, the site is only accessible in person as a dive location. Divers who wish to visit the site can take a dive boat .93 miles off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park. The coordinates for the new Super Reef UMA entrance are N 30°18.754 / W 86°09.521. Out of respect for the art, boaters are asked to anchor on or near the Super Reef Anchor Point to protect the sculptures from unintended contact or damage. Visit UMAFL.org for more information about dive shops, tours and obtaining your certification while visiting South Walton. Photos and videos of the sculptures will continue to be updated online periodically to document the marine growth on each sculpture. Both SWARA and the CAA wish to extend special thanks to our deployment partner, Walter Marine, for their dedication to excellence in helping bring our vision into reality. Artists interested in submitting artwork for consideration to the 2023 UMA installation can visit UMAFL.org to complete a pre-application in anticipation of an Artist Call announcement later this year.

- CAA Participates In National Arts & Economic Prosperity Study
The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) is pleased to announce its participation in Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), the most comprehensive economic impact study of the nonprofit arts and culture industry ever conducted in the United States. Administered by Americans for the Arts, AEP6 will examine the economic impact of the arts and culture in Walton County, FL and 386 additional communities representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The Arts & Economic Prosperity® series is conducted approximately every five years to gauge the economic impact of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and the event-related spending by their audiences. In 2017, AEP5 documented that the nonprofit arts and culture industry generated $166.3 billion in economic activity (spending by organizations plus the event-related spending by their audiences) which supported 4.6 million jobs and generated $27.5 billion in government revenue. The AEP series demonstrates that an investment in the arts provides both cultural and economic benefits. Audience-intercept surveys will be collected from attendees to arts events in Walton County from May 2022 through April 2023—in total, the national sample is anticipated to surpass 250,000 surveys. A survey of nonprofit arts and culture organizations will occur from January through April 2023. The national and local findings will be made public in September 2023. At that time, the CAA will receive a customized report on the unique economic impact results for Walton County including the number of jobs that are supported and the amount of government revenue that is generated by our community’s nonprofit arts industry. Americans for the Arts is committed to addressing equity and inclusion as a critical component of the methodology, organizational participation, and collection of data for AEP6 by centering and representing BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, Native American) identifying communities—a segment of the nonprofit arts and culture sector that has been underrepresented in past studies. For the first time, AEP6 will require that the local and state research partners collect a portion of audience surveys from attendees at events hosted by arts and culture organizations that primarily serve communities of color. The AEP6 study will establish a benchmark of arts and culture organizations that primarily serve communities of color, and the audiences that attend their events. It will also identify organizations that have a chief executive who identifies as BIPOC/ALAANA. Researchers will use this data to calculate and report on the economic impact of the BIPOC/ALAANA arts sector in each of the participating communities. “The CAA is proud to partner with Americans for the Arts and hundreds of other arts organizations across the country on this important study that will certainly drive home the value of the Arts to Walton County and the state of Florida,” said CAA Executive Director Jennifer Steele. “We look forward to working with our fellow creative businesses and organizations to gather information that will help us prove not just the economic impact but also the social and cultural benefits that the Arts provide to Walton County residents and visitors.” Nolen V. Bivens, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts, commented, “The arts are economic catalysts—strengthening the economy by creating jobs, generating government revenue, and driving tourism. Community is where the arts make a difference, and while the national impact data are impressive, at its core, AEP6 is a local story. I look forward to seeing its results, which will be key in persuading decision-makers that the arts benefit all people in all communities.” The CAA’s participation in the AEP6 study is supported in part by the Florida Department of State Division of Arts & Culture. For more information and a full list of the communities participating in the AEP6 study, visit www.americansforthearts.org/AEP6.

- Creative Kids Camps Offered At The Bayou Arts Center This Summer
The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) announces the 2022 return of its popular program for children, Creative Kids Camp, a series of week-long visual arts camp sessions designed to give primary, elementary, and middle school-aged children a different daily hands-on experience. Camp sessions are Monday through Friday with a different age group served each week during the month of June. Middle school sessions for 5th & 6th graders run June 6 -10 from 9am - 2pm. Elementary sessions for 3rd & 4th graders will run June 13 -17 from 9am - 2pm. Primary school sessions for K-2nd graders run June 20 - 24 from 9am - 1pm. Creative Kids Camps take place in the CAA’s Bayou Arts Center located at 105 Hogtown Bayou Lane in Santa Rosa Beach. This year’s lead instructor and artist is Brittany Bigler. Brittany is a certified K-5th grade teacher who is currently teaching Art & Science at Ohana Institute. Her passion for art began at an early age, so she is happy to continue to foster that passion while helping young artists develop and grow their own seeds of creativity. Brittany will teach the campers how to work with a variety of mediums and use different techniques so each student goes home with a diverse portfolio of work. Planned activities include 3-D sculpture and design, clay hand building, paper maché, and weaving. Pricing is $150 per child for each five-day session, and space is limited. All supplies are included. Registration is available online at CulturalArtsAlliance.com/upcoming-events. Students should be dressed for a fun and messy art experience and should come to class with a lunch and drink or water bottle. Light snacks will be provided.
